Faux Painting Techniques with Novacolor

Faux painting is the use of specific painting techniques in order to create the appearance of marble, wood or metal, for instance.

It is also a wonderful way of giving your walls a unique look, and Novacolor Decorative Finishes are ideal for achieving the perfect finish for faux painting projects. Whether you wish to achieve a stone, marbled or metallic effect, for example, there is a Novacolor finish to match the task. Here are a few tips on how to achieve some of these faux finishes.

Faux Stone

Particularly effective when combined with the silky effect of Novacolor Africa or the pearly effect of Tuscania Antica Effetti, for instance, the Faux Stone effect can be achieved by following these steps:

Using a trowel, apply a layer (1/4") of the selected Novacolor finish to the wall and allow to set for about 30 minutes (no need to evenly smooth the surface, as the next step involves adding texture)

Next, place the trowel flat onto the surface and create the texture by pulling it away. Immediately following this, gently smooth over the now peaked surface to create an overall flat finish with underlying craters. Allow to dry for between 24 and 48 hours.

If desired, the surface can then be sealed by using a cloth or sponge to liberally apply Novacolor Clear Coat (not wiping in any particular direction). Any excess should be wiped off immediately with a clean rag.

Faux Marble

While any of Novacolor's Decorative Finishes are great for achieving faux marble effects, the inherent marbleising effect of Visionnaire make this finish particularly suitable for Faux Marble projects. A simple marble effect can be achieved with this finish by applying a layer of Visionnaire with a stainless steel trowel and allowing to set. Following this, a second layer of the product is applied, again using a stainless steel trowel, in small strokes in random directions until the surface is fully covered. The surface is then burnished with a stainless steel trowel.

Smooth Faux Metallic Finish

Products like MiKu or Hypnose, for example, are perfect for smooth faux metallic surfaces. The effect can be achieved by applying a first coat of the product used and smoothing it evenly with a stainless steel trowel. After allowing this coat to dry, apply a slighter thinner coat of product and work well into the surface, again with the help of a stainless steel trowel. Burnish the surface with the stainless steel trowel while still wet.

Textured Faux Metallic Finish

Using Rust-on, a delightful textured antique metal effect can be created by either applying the technique described for the faux stone effect, or by following the steps shown in the video tutorial on the Novacolor Rust-On product page.
